England manager Roy Hodgson feels that Wayne Rooney is guaranteed to be remembered by the country's fans, irrespective of whether he can fire the Three Lions to success at a major international tournament.

Rooney, who Hodgson named England captain last summer, is just one goal behind Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time England goalscoring record, which sits at 49 goals.

Charlton scored his 49 goals in 106 games, while Rooney has 47 goals in 102 games to his name.

Rooney looks poised to break the record, but Charlton still has the accolade of having helped England to success in the World Cup, in 1966.

The current England skipper has yet to go beyond the quarter-finals stage at any of the five major tournaments he has been involved in. But Hodgson feels that Rooney will go down in England history regardless of whether that changes or not.

"He will be remembered", Hodgson was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"We don't have that many players who have played 100 games for England or captained England, so don't worry about Wayne Rooney not being remembered – he will be."

Rooney will have the chance to further close in on Charlton's goals record on Tuesday evening when England take on Italy in a friendly in Turin.
