Former Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes believes that Lukas Podolski was advised poorly in the winter transfer window, when he swapped Arsenal for Inter.

Podolski joined Inter on loan from Arsenal for the remainder of the campaign in January, aiming to clock up regular first team football at the San Siro, after growing tired of sitting on the bench at the Emirates Stadium.

The German has struggled to make an impact in Italy and is yet to score in Serie A, amid strong suggestions Inter will not try to keep him on a permanent basis in the summer.

For Heynckes, Podolski was wrongly advised by his agents and the proof of how the forward can perform comes from his displays at international level.

He told Kicker: "Lukas did not get very intelligent advice from his advisers.

"I had him for five weeks at Bayern and with me he played all five games and played very well.

"I do not understand how this player can be so different now.

"[Joachim] Low in the national team is managing him very well, he is exceptional and knows how to handle him, but Podolski must always know that there will be his coach's protective hand."

Podolski has made 24 appearances in all competitions this season, across his time at both Arsenal and Inter, and has scored just three goals.

Last term Podolski clocked up 27 appearances in all competitions, but hit the back of the net on 12 occasions.
