Manchester United starlet Liam Grimshaw has emphasised the importance of being a good passer at Old Trafford, even though his current role is to act as a tough-tackling midfielder and protect the side's defence.

Grimshaw has operated in a number of positions throughout his time at Manchester United thus far, featuring as a full-back and a centre-back, before more recently being shifted into a midfield role.

The youngster knows protecting the defence is currently his job, but has stressed the importance of being comfortable on the ball, especially as Manchester United as a club look to dominate possession against opponents.

Grimshaw, who scored twice in the Nike Cup at the weekend, told Inside United: "Hopefully [defensive midfield will be my role], but I don’t really know. I can get forward as well. It’s important to have one position, but I think it’s important to be able to play other positions.

"In the midfield, you’ve got to keep going in there and do the job you have been asked to do.

"The thing is you’ve got to be able to pass the ball, especially at a club like this, because a lot of lads are fit and can run around frustrating everyone, but you’ve got to be able to do a bit with the ball as well", Grimshaw added.

The versatile youngster joined Manchester United in 2002 and has been lauded by the club's youth coach Paul McGuiness for his ability to play in a number of positions.

Grimshaw has now forced his way into Warren Joyce's Under-21 side, while he scored a brace against Hertha Berlin in a 3-3 draw in the Nike Cup at the weekend; Hertha Berlin won the game 3-1 on penalties.
