Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea feels that a club of the Red Devils’ stature cannot afford to miss out on the Champions League for two seasons in a row.

The Old Trafford residents went through a turbulent time under David Moyes’ ill-fated ten months in charge of the Premier League giants which culminated in them finishing a lowly seventh and thereby missing out on qualification for the Champions League.

Under Louis van Gaal, Manchester United are currently lying fourth in the table, five points clear of fifth placed Liverpool and with eight rounds of matches to go, the three time European champions appear strong favourites to finish among the top four.

De Gea, who has been instrumental in goal for the Red Devils and whose heroics have won his side multiple points this campaign, feels that Manchester United have to qualify for the Champions League this term no matter what.

“We have to qualify for the Champions League no matter what”, the 24-year-old said in an interview with FIFA.

“We already missed out last season, and a team like Manchester United cannot do that two years in a row”, he added.

De Gea has been called-up on international duty by Spain national team manager Vicente del Bosque and may feature in the starting line-up when they play the Netherlands in a friendly tonight.

Manchester United will resume their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday post the ongoing international break.
