West Ham have sounded out former Sunderland manager Gus Poyet over taking charge at Upton Park next season, it has been claimed.

Poyet was sacked as Sunderland boss earlier this season and has been succeeded by Dutchman Dick Advocaat in the hot seat at the Stadium of Light.

The Uruguayan is keen to return to management as soon as possible and may be presented with the chance to take charge of West Ham.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, West Ham have informally sounded out Poyet over whether he would be interested in taking over at Upton Park for next term.

Current West Ham boss Sam Allardyce has been tipped to exit the club at the end of the season and ironically has been linked with taking over at Poyet's former club Sunderland.

Allardyce has enjoyed a positive campaign with West Ham this term, keeping the Hammers close to the top four in the Premier League for large parts of the season.

At present the Hammers sit ninth in the Premier League with 42 points from 30 games.
