Tim Sherwood has thanked Tottenham Hotspur after his Aston Villa side beat Spurs 1-0 today, saying that had the north London side not appointed him last year he would not have been given the job at Villa Park.

Aston Villa set up to provide an attacking threat from the off at White Hart Lane and went toe to toe with Tottenham.

Villa suffered an early blow when Ciaran Clark was forced off with an injury in the 18th minute, but in the 35th minute the visitors were jubilant, with Christian Benteke getting on the end of a Leonardo Bacuna cross to head into the back of the net.

As the second half ticked down, with Villa holding onto the 1-0 lead, Spurs threw on Roberto Soldado (62nd minute) and Erik Lamela (79th minute) as attacking substitutions to chase the game.

But Spurs could not find a way through and despite Villa having Carlos Sanchez sent off in injury time, the visitors held on to claim a 1-0 win.

Sherwood, who Spurs sacked last summer to make way for Mauricio Pochettino, celebrated in front of the Villa fans.

"It's a fantastic result – we carried on from the good performance in the 3-3 draw against QPR", he told the BBC.

"We thought we could have a good go and we did. I thought we deserved to win.

"Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy made the decision [to sack me] based on what he thought was the right thing to do. Mauricio Pochettino is doing a good job.

"Without Spurs giving me the job last year, I wouldn't have been here today to enjoy this win", Sherwood added.
