Schalke chairman Clemens Tonnies is keen for his side to find an agreement with Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira and has thrown the ball into the court of sporting director Horst Heldt to get a deal done with the player's agent.

Khedira is out of contract with Real Madrid at the end of the season and is moving on from the Spanish club in search of a new adventure.

The Germany international has been linked with a whole host of clubs, including Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan, with his free transfer status making him an attractive proposition.

But Schalke are doing all they can to take Khedira to Germany at the end of the season, with Tonnies hopeful they can do a deal with the 28-year-old.

Tonnies told Sport 1: "I have a high opinion of Sami Khedira because he is a leader who can take the team forward.

"He has been discussed many times.

"Now it is up to Horst Heldt and Khedira's agent to find an acceptable solution."

Khedira left Germany to sign for Real Madrid in 2010, swapping Stuttgart for Los Blancos.

The midfielder has only managed eleven appearances in La Liga for Real Madrid so far this season with injuries and the fierce competition for a spot in Carlo Ancelotti's team playing their part.
