Monaco have set their sights on Chelsea attacking midfielder Gael Kakuta as a potential summer signing.

The principality club have changed their approach to signings and big-money arrivals are off the agenda in the immediate future as complying with UEFA's financial fair play regulations becomes the goal.

According to France Football, Monaco are taking a keen interest in Kakuta, who is currently on loan in Spain with Rayo Vallecano.

After disappointing on a series of loan spells, the 23-year-old has caught the eye in La Liga and has 31 appearances and five goals to his name for Rayo Vallecano.

Chelsea are thought to be looking for a fee of between €3m and €4m for the Frenchman, a sum well within reach for Monaco.

Kakuta was plucked out of the youth set-up at Lens by Chelsea in 2007 and tipped for big things.

However, he has struggled to live up to expectations and has spent time on loan at Fulham, Bolton, Dijon, Vitesse and Lazio before linking up with Rayo Vallecano.
