Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen admits that Newcastle United should have had a penalty against the Reds at Anfield this evening, but has brushed off the incident as something which simply happens from time to time.

The Reds took the lead in the eighth minute through Raheem Sterling, who curled the ball past Tim Krul in the Magpies goal.

However, in the 38th minute, Dejan Lovren clattered into Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez, bringing him down in the box. Newcastle wanted a penalty, but the referee waved away their protests.

Allen was right in front of the incident and admitted post-match that it was a penalty; Liverpool scored a second goal in the second half to win 2-0, Allen scoring.

"If I'm honest it looked like it was a good shout for a penalty", he told Sky Sports.

"But I had one the other night and didn't get it – so these things happen."

Newcastle manager John Carver also felt that his side should have had a penalty and dubbed the incident a "stonewall" spot-kick.

Carver said: "I've looked at it. I thought at the time it was a stonewall penalty and it was."

Liverpool's win takes them up to fifth in the Premier League table and just four points behind fourth placed Manchester City.

Newcastle meanwhile sit 13th in the table with 35 points from 32 games.
