Newcastle United boss John Carver has insisted that his side deserved a penalty against Liverpool last night at Anfield.

Two goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen helped Brendan Rodgers’ side to register a 2-0 win over Carver’s men.

Liverpool took the lead in the eighth minute but Newcastle feel that they were legitimately denied a penalty when Dejan Lovren clattered into Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez in 38th minute, bringing him down in the box. The referee waved play on and the Reds escaped a scary moment.

Carver was furious in the technical area following the incident and insisted that his side were denied an opportunity to level the score at a crucial moment of the game.

"Everyone out there has seen it is a penalty. Even Brendan [Rodgers] said straight away it is a penalty”, Carver told the BBC.

"I will phone referees' chief Mike Riley tomorrow, he will probably agree, but it gets us nothing.”

The Newcastle boss admits that they need to pick up some points in their last six fixtures to secure their Premier League status but stressed that he is confident that his side are good enough to do the job.

"We have six cup finals and we need to pick up some points by hook or by crook.

"That is why our fans are going to be important to us. I have enough belief in this group of lads and if we see anything near what I saw tonight there won't be a problem."
