Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi has expressed his unhappiness at missing penalties, saying that his missed spot-kicks anger him.

Messi has enjoyed a stellar season thus far after enduring a difficult campaign last term. In his 31 La Liga appearances thus far, the Argentine has netted 34 goals and assisted a further 18 to fire the Catalans to the top of the table.

His eight goals and three assists in the Champions League have helped Luis Enrique’s side reach the quarter-finals of the prestigious competition where they will play Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg tomorrow at the Parc des Princes.

However, Messi has struggled with his penalty conversions, missing five of the last 11 he has taken. He missed a crucial spot-kick in the second leg of Barcelona’s Champions League round of 16 tie against Manchester City, but in the end the Catalans won the tie with ease.

The Argentina national team captain has revealed that he is angered by his penalty misses, but admitted that it is merely part and parcel of the game.

“It angers me”, he told his club’s site.

“Both with Barca and the Argentina national team I am the penalty taker and the goalkeepers study you and know you better every time.

“It is true that a well-taken penalty is very difficult to save, but at the moment it is more difficult for me when I'm taking penalties.

“These things happen in football, but I do get very annoyed when I miss, like against Manchester City when the goal would have given us a much bigger advantage.”
