Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has hit back at Jose Mourinho saying today's encounter at Stamford Bridge went exactly as he planned.

Van Gaal's men completely dominated the Premier League clash, but suffered when Eden Hazard fired Chelsea ahead in the 38th minute after a good move from the Blues.

Chelsea instantly dropped back and offered little going forward, with Manchester United completely dominating ball possession and creating chances.

In the second half Manchester United had 75 per cent of the ball, but good chances for Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney were spurned by the visitors.

Nevertheless, Chelsea looked like the away side, defending deeply. The Blues held on though and Mourinho said after the match that the game went exactly as he planned.

But Van Gaal cannot accept that, given just how much possession Manchester United enjoyed in what he feels was their best performance of the season.

Asked if Mourinho was telling the truth about the game going exactly as he wanted it, Van Gaal told Sky Sports: "I don't think so.

"But everybody can have his own opinion and the winner takes it all. It's a song, but it's like that."

And Van Gaal praised his side's overall display, feeling just taking their chances was missing.

"In my opinion it was the best performance we have had this season, so I'm disappointed with the result, but with the performance I'm pleased.

"We were not effective today because we created a lot of chances. In the first half three and Chelsea zero. In the second half we created eight and Chelsea three.

"We were the dominant team on the pitch, but you lose and everything in football is the result."
