Mikel Arteta has promised Arsenal that they will have no issues when it comes to renewing his contract at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger is keen to keep Arteta at the club and the Spaniard is also desperate to extend his stay with the Gunners.

The 33-year-old midfielder will miss today's FA Cup semi-final against Reading as he continues his recovery from an ankle injury he picked up on Under-21 action; his Under-21 appearance was a step towards recovering from an earlier calf injury. The Spaniard is now aiming to quickly recover and put himself back in the mix for selection in the business end of the campaign.

Arteta was quoted as saying by ITV: "My only aim is to get back fit and try to perform on the pitch. As long as I do that I am sure that I will continue with this club, with the relationship I have with the club and the respect I have from everybody here.

"If I don't do that then I am not going to be here because I don't want to be somewhere where I cannot perform at my best and give what I think I can give", he added.

And when it comes to penning a new contract with Arsenal, Arteta does not anticipate any problems and feels a simple chat will be enough for him to reach an agreement with the Gunners over extending his stay in north London.

"In May, when everything is fine, we will sit down and talk and it will take five minutes."

Arteta joined Arsenal from Everton in 2011, costing around £10m.
