Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that the controversies surrounding Raheem Sterling have turned into a distraction for the Reds.

Sterling has been source of controversy for Liverpool over the last few months. From his contract wrangle with the club to his off field antics, which have shone the spotlight onto the club, the winger has been making the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The England winger also said in an unsanctioned interview that his focus is not on money and he is only keen to give himself more opportunities to win trophies.

Brendan Rodgers has said that he has spoken with the 20-year-old over the latest controversies and is hoping they will dissipate quickly.

However, Carragher feels Sterling is slowly becoming a source of distraction for the club and believes something needs to be done to bring back the focus to their football.

"Even if you don't talk about it, it is in the background", Carragher told the BBC.

"Rodgers is asked the day before a game, when he should be talking football he's thinking about Sterling."

He also feels that the Liverpool players might take matters into their own hands if the controversies surrounding Sterling refuse to dissipate.

When asked if the Liverpool players would intervene, the former defender said: "If it continually happens you know you've got a problem and you may need to pull someone and have a word with them."
