John Terry says that Chelsea were delighted to see Wayne Rooney played in midfield today, after the Blues ground out a 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Premier League.

Chelsea took the lead in the first half after a well-worked move from the Blues, which allowed the Belgian the space to guide a shot into the back of the net in the 38th minute at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues dropped deeper and deeper in the second half, inviting Manchester United onto them.

Manchester United dominated possession, enjoying 75 per cent of the ball to Chelsea's 25 per cent.

Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney had chances, but could not find the back of the net as Manchester United toiled for an equaliser.

Louis van Gaal brought on Angel di Maria and Adnan Januzaj, but the pair could not help the Red Devils find a way through.

Chelsea won 1-0 and Terry admits that seeing Rooney in midfield, Van Gaal having dropped him back from up front due to injuries, was a relief for the Blues.

He told Sky Sports: "Quite relieved [to see Rooney in midfield] actually.

"He's a world-class player. So we were relieved to see him in midfield.

"He's a phenomenal player and such a threat in that role behind the striker, so to see him in midfield was good for us actually."

And Terry concedes that Manchester United did dictate the match, but stresses the win was crucial for Chelsea as they move towards a first title since 2010.

"We realised we needed to win. It was a really tough game. Manchester United are in great form at the moment.

"They probably had the better possession and dictated the game better than we did. We've not been playing as well as we can, but we have been grinding out results."
