Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has hit out at his former club's recruitment policy and the big wages demanded by several players following a lacklustre display which saw the Reds knocked out of the FA Cup today.

Brendan Rodgers' side were second best against Aston Villa throughout their FA Cup semi-final clash at Wembley, going down to a 2-1 defeat which left the manager with few complaints.

Liverpool were outfought across the pitch, with Aston Villa dominating the game and several of the Reds' big name players not turning up on the big occasion.

For Carragher, the debacle reflects badly on Liverpool's recruitment policy and a number of players, with a clear hint towards Raheem Sterling, who has refused an offer of £100,000 per week to sign a new contract.

Carragher wrote on Twitter: "Big games need big players to do big things.

"Not many of them at Lfc which make wages [sic] demands of some ridiculous & the recruitment worse."

Liverpool are also likely to miss out on finishing in the top four in the Premier League this season, along with ending the campaign empty handed.

And manager Rodgers is still waiting to win the first major trophy of his managerial career.
