Tim Sherwood has joked that Aston Villa "robbed" Liverpool today in the FA Cup semi-final, after his side won 2-1 and the Reds saw a goal which looked onside ruled out for offside.

It was Liverpool who took the lead, against the run of play, when Philippe Coutinho found the back of the net in the 30th minute.

Aston Villa quickly hit back though, with Christian Benteke needing just six minutes to draw his side level at 1-1.

Liverpool brought on Mario Balotelli at half time, but could not stem the Aston Villa tide and eventually Sherwood's men grabbed their second through Fabian Delph in the 54th minute.

The Reds huffed and puffed, but Villa had chances to extend their advantage, though Liverpool did see the ball cleared off the line from Kieran Richardson.

Then, in the 87th minute, Steven Gerrard picked out Balotelli with a superb ball and the Italian struck the back of the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside, despite it appearing he was onside.

Liverpool were out and Aston Villa through 2-1, leaving Sherwood delighted.

Told Balotelli's goal was onside, Sherwood told BT Sport: "We robbed them."

And he joked about facing Arsenal in the final given he is a former Tottenham boss, adding: "I'll get a good reaction from those Arsenal fans."

Sherwood also praised Jack Grealish for his display, saying: "He could be right up there amongst the best of them. The ball is a friend of his.

"He's Aston Villa through and through. He lives a couple of miles away from the ground. He just wants to play for Aston Villa and I want to give him the platform to do that because he has earned the right."
