Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has expressed his gratitude towards Louis van Gaal for trusting him in a big game against Chelsea.

Though Manchester United suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, Shaw’s performance against the Blues was widely praised.

It was his first appearance for the Red Devils since picking up a knock against Arsenal in the FA Cup and he was only in the team because Daley Blind was out due to an injury.

Shaw has so far struggled to adjust to life at Old Trafford following his big money move from Southampton last summer but he admits that he is getting immense support from his family during a difficult period of his career.

The England left-back reserved special praise for Van Gaal and said that he has learned a lot from the Dutchman since his return to training. He is grateful towards the Manchester United boss for showing enough trust and starting him against Chelsea.

"I have family and friends who are helping me on my journey and the manager has been unbelievable as well", Shaw said via his club's site.

"Over the last three weeks, especially, I have learned a lot from him and credit goes to him for trusting me in a big game like the Chelsea one.”

Shaw pointed out that Manchester United’s recent performances are a reflection of their hard work in training under Van Gaal and stressed that the Dutchman demands complete focus from his players even during training matches.

He insisted that there is more to come from this Manchester United team and they will show their true worth next season.

"You have seen what he has turned United into in recent weeks, but that is because there is real focus. You have to give 100 per cent in every training session and game and be focused all the time.

"We want to keep improving so that we can come out firing next season."
