Liverpool legend Ronnie Whelan feels Brendan Rodgers’ men didn’t push hard enough against Aston Villa yesterday.

Though the Reds took the lead through a Philippe Coutinho goal in the first half, goals from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph on either side of the break helped the Villans to claim victory in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.

In a disappointing performance, the Reds found it hard to break down Tim Sherwood’s men in the second half to find the equaliser and bowed out of the competition.

Liverpool boss Rodgers has lamented the fact that the occasion got to some of his players and they were second best to Villa on the day on most aspects of the game.

Whelan feels after struggling their way through to the semi-finals, Liverpool supporters were expecting a big performance at Wembley but he admits that he is struggling to find one Reds player who did justice to their talent.

“I am struggling to find one player in the Liverpool team who performed well”, Whelan told LFC TV.

“The disappointment is that we came this far by beating the likes of Bolton and Blackburn in replays, you expected something from the players in the big, big semi-final and it didn’t happen for us today.”

The former midfielder feels that some of them should have rallied around the players who were not playing well but believes none of Rodgers’ men tried to push hard and help each other during the game.

“If someone’s having a bad time, other players should be coming around saying ‘I’ll help to drag you through this’.

“It didn’t look like any Liverpool player was really trying to help each other. It seemed they didn’t push themselves that extra yard.”
