Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has said that his team needed to win against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Spurs headed into Sunday’s clash on the back of their 1-0 loss to Aston Villa at White Hart Lane and prior to that they were held to a scoreless draw by Sean Dyche’s relegation strugglers Burnley at Turf Moor.

In the prevailing circumstances, Kane feels that it was important for Tottenham Hotspur to stop their two-match winless streak and collect all three points against the Magpies.

“We needed this win”, he told his club’s site.

“We had two disappointing results in the last couple of weeks and we had to put it right.”

Nacer Chadli, Christian Eriksen and Kane were on target to guide the north Londoners to a 3-1 win which sees them occupying sixth spot in the table. And the 21-year-old acknowledged that his team’s performance deserved the full three points at St James' Park.

“Newcastle is no easy place to come to but we played well, kept the ball well, created chances and deserved to win.

“They put us on the back foot straight away in the second half.

“That was disappointing from our point of view but it shows our character that we went again, got the second and finished it off with the third.

“We knew Villa wasn’t good enough last week and we don’t just want the season to fizzle out with a few losses.

“We trained hard and knew we had to put it right.

“We played well and deserved to win.”

Spurs will look to win all three points when they play Ronald Koeman’s Southampton in their next league fixture this Saturday.
