Former Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has denied advising Manchester United number one David de Gea not to sign for Real Madrid.

De Gea has enjoyed a stellar campaign with the Red Devils this season, coming to their rescue time and again and playing a big part in helping them reach third spot in the Premier League as Louis van Gaal’s men attempt a return to the Champions League after a year’s absence.

On the other hand, Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas has experienced a tumultuous season in Los Blancos' goal as the reigning European champions lost valuable points in La Liga at the start of the year and consequently slipped to second spot in the table.

Real Madrid are reported to be tracking De Gea, who joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2011, in order to bring the Spaniard back to La Liga in the summer.

Bayern Munich shot-stopper Reina, who was reported last month to have advised his compatriot against signing for Los Blancos, has denied doing so.

“I did not tell De Gea not to leave for Madrid”, he was quoted as saying by Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo.

“I said he was in a great team and he should do what he wanted”, Reina added.

In his 33 Premier League appearances so far this season, De Gea has conceded 31 goals, keeping ten clean sheets in the process.
