Manchester United defender Jonny Evans is looking forward to staking a claim in Louis van Gaal’s first team after serving out his six-match suspension for a spitting incident involving Newcastle United’s Papiss Cisse last month.

After serving his ban Evans returned to action for Manchester United’s Under-21 team as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium yesterday.




Manchester United are sitting atop the Under-21 Premier League table with 31 points from their 18 games and remain firm favourites to win the title this season.

Evans has expressed his happiness over returning to action as he attempts make a return to the first team and help Van Gaal’s men finish the season on a strong note.
 


“It felt good”, Evans told MUTV.

“But it does take you a while to get the pace of the game. Sometimes the pace in the reserves is not as high as it is in the first team but it was quick.

“Leicester are a good side who played well and made it a good game.”

The 27-year-old had words of praise for Manchester United’s youngsters for the effort that they have put in to reach the top of the standings as they attempt to win the league.

“Our reserve team lads have been playing all season to win the league and then we came along and took their starting places with a couple of games left – that's the way it goes!

“But we couldn't let them down. It was important we didn't lose as the lads are top of the league."
