Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has signed a new contract with the club which is due to run until the summer of 2019.

There had been speculation about Smalling's future at Old Trafford, with Arsene Wenger's Arsenal recently linked with making a move for the centre-back.

But Manchester United have quickly ended talk of a switch for Smalling by thrashing out a deal with the England international which secures his future at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils announced: "Chris Smalling has signed a new contract which keeps him at the club until at least June 2019."

The 25-year-old, who made his Manchester United debut in 2010, has been quick to welcome the new contract.

Smalling told his club's site: "I’m delighted to sign my new contract. I am so proud to play for such a great club.

"We have developed as a team over the course of the season under Louis van Gaal and we are now playing as a complete unit.

"This is a very exciting time to be at Manchester United, we are all determined to get back to where we belong and competing at the highest level."

In total Smalling has clocked up 147 appearances for Manchester United since he joined the club from Fulham, collecting two Premier League titles along the way.

This term he has helped Manchester United to sit third in the Premier League and on course to qualify for the Champions League.
