Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri is delighted with his team’s progress into the semi-finals of the Champions League following their 1-0 aggregate win over Monaco last night.

The Old Lady were held to a scoreless draw by Leonardo Jardim’s Monaco at the Stade Louis II last night, but the stalemate proved sufficient for the Italians as they had won the first leg at the Juventus Stadium 1-0 last week.

The reigning Italian champions have progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 12 years and Allegri, who took the reins of the Italian giants at the start of the current season, feels that Juventus’ foray into the last four could prove to be a harbinger of European success for his team.

“Tonight I want to celebrate with the fans – it is turning into a great year for Juventus”, he was quoted as saying by UEFA.

“There were signs of us becoming a great European team again.”

Allegri acknowledged that his team didn’t play to their standards in both legs, but took pride in the way his charges defended.

“We did not have great games in either leg but Monaco are pretty good – we knew they would be. We did not have many chances but we defended well.

“My players were hit by a virus, they were sick, so we have achieved a big thing by qualifying here.

“Twelve years on we are in the semi-finals again. I fear no one – we will play the best teams in Europe and this will be a very exciting challenge.”
