Liverpool have officially confirmed that midfielder Jordan Henderson has penned a new deal to secure his stay at Anfield.

There had been speculation recently that the 24-year-old was set to put pen to paper on a new contract, estimated at £100,000 per week, and now Liverpool have confirmed he has indeed signed.

Liverpool announced the news via their official site, saying in a statement: "Liverpool Football Club are delighted to announce Jordan Henderson has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

"The 24-year-old has committed his future to the Reds by penning the deal at Melwood today."

Henderson has developed into a key man under Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and is the club's vice-captain. The England international is expected to succeed Steven Gerrard as club captain when the talisman moves to Los Angeles Galaxy this summer.

Liverpool snapped Henderson up from Sunderland in 2011, former manager Kenny Dalglish doing the deal to take him to Anfield.

So far Henderson has made 180 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, scoring 20 goals.

The midfielder, who now also regularly features for England, has been quick to express his delight at the deal and is expecting good times on the horizon for the Reds.

He told his club's site: "I'm over the moon that it's finally done.

"There has been talk about it for a while now. It's brilliant news for me to commit my future to this football club – I really feel that it's a good time for us to look forward to the future, with the squad we've got, the manager, the size of the club and the fans we've got. I really think, over the next few years, we can challenge and start winning trophies."
