Everton star James McCarthy says his side knew Manchester United would attack them, leaving space for the counter attack, as the Toffees ran out 3-0 winners at Goodison Park.

Everton took the lead in just the fifth minute after a stunningly quick counter attack, which allowed McCarthy to get in between Paddy McNair and Daley Blind to poke the ball beyond David de Gea.

A second goal then arrived for the Toffees in the 35th minute, with defender John Stones rising highest to power a header into the back of the net.

Louis van Gaal threw on Radamel Falcao at half-time and then Angel di Maria in the second half, but Everton grabbed a third in the 73rd minute when Kevin Mirallas struck after another quick move.

Falcao had a goal ruled out for offside late on as Manchester United could not even find a consolation and slipped to a 3-0 defeat.

McCarthy is delighted with the win and explained that Everton were sure Manchester United would want the ball and to attack them.

"We knew Man United would come at us and we hit them on the break a couple of times and we scored a couple from it", he told Sky Sports.

"I thought we were magnificent from start to finish."

McCarthy feels the win is vital for Everton, but has warned the side not to get carried away.

"Obviously it's been a frustrating campaign, but we've picked up a few wins on the bounce now and we want to kick on and finish the season on a high.

"We don't want to get carried away, but obviously it's a big win against Man United and we want to keep going."
