Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has come to the defence of Cristiano Ronaldo following criticism of the forward's behaviour after he was pictured shaking his head in disappointment after Los Blancos’ 3-0 win over Almeria last night.

A stupendous strike from James Rodriguez and an Alvaro Arbeloa tap-in were sandwiched between an own goal by Mauro dos Santos as Real Madrid registered a comprehensive win over Almeria at the Santiago Bernabeu to remain within two points of league leaders Barcelona

Ronaldo, who has scored 50 goals in all competitions this term, failed to get on the scoresheet for the second game in succession and he was pictured walking off unhappily after the final whistle.

He twice came close to scoring, but Dos Santos got at the end of a low cross to nudge the ball into his own net. For the third goal Arbeloa got to the end of a similar cross from Javier Hernandez to deny the Portuguese a simple tap-in.

The 30-year-old was seen angrily kicking the ball into the net and then shaking his head in disappointment after the third goal and left the pitch unhappy at the final whistle. However, Ancelotti has leapt to the defence of his team’s talisman.

“He’s great, he’s not tired, he’s fresh, he didn’t score but he worked well for a goal”, the Italian was quoted as saying by AS.

“He could score on Saturday.

“If Cristiano didn’t score from here to the end of the season I’d be happy, he’s already scored 50, I’ve never had a player like him in my career”, Ancelotti concluded.
