Tottenham Hotspur representatives met Marseille president Vincent Labrune earlier this week to negotiate a deal for French midfielder Florian Thauvin, it has been claimed.

The 22-year-old was heavily linked with a move away from the Stade Velodrome last summer with Tottenham believed to be one of the clubs keen to get their hands on him. Thauvin is known to be highly rated by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who has dubbed him French football's great hope.

He stayed put at the club last summer and has scored five goals and provided seven assists in 33 league appearances for Marseille this season.

Though he continued to remain a key member of their squad this season, Marcelo Bielsa is believed to be tired of some of his erratic performances and Marseille are known to be interested in listening to offers for him this summer.

Tottenham have reignited their interest in the player and have stepped up on their pursuit of Thauvin. According to French daily Le Parisien, Marseille president Labrune met the Spurs officials earlier this week to thrash out the terms of a deal for the midfielder.

With Spurs keen to take Thauvin to north London this summer, both clubs are confident of agreeing a deal for the 22-year-old and the transfer fee is expected to be around the €15m to €20m figure.

Mauricio Pochettino has said that Tottenham need a ‘big’ summer to challenge for a Champions League berth next season and believes Thauvin’s creative qualities could be a useful addition to his squad.
