Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is sure that Angel di Maria would be strutting his stuff at the Parc des Princes if not for UEFA's financial fair play regulations.

The French champions were hit with sanctions by UEFA last summer for breaching FFP regulations, with restrictions on how much their wage bill could increase by, how much they could spend and also the size of their squad for the Champions League.

PSG were rivalling Manchester United for Di Maria's signature and appeared to be favourites in the race before dropping out due to financial concerns.

And Al-Khelaifi feels that if UEFA's FFP rules had not been in force then the winger would be playing in the French capital.

"UEFA has to change the rules, I have confidence in them doing so", the president told Le Parisien.

"We have been handicapped and clearly slowed down.

"Without these sanctions, one could imagine that Di Maria would be at PSG this season."

PSG have been linked with rekindling their interest in Di Maria when the summer transfer window swings open, but it is less than clear whether Manchester United have the stomach to sell the Argentine just one year after breaking the British transfer record to take him to Old Trafford.

Di Maria cost Manchester United £59.7m to sign from Real Madrid.
