Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that midfielder Jack Wilshere needs to go one or two years without injury to fully recover his confidence and belief.

The England international has been dogged by injury problems in recent years and has been out of action for the last five months after suffering an ankle injury, which required surgery, earlier this season.

The 23-year-old was named on the bench by Wenger for last weekend's 0-0 draw with Chelsea, but the Frenchman feels there is still a long road back for Wilshere to travel to regain his confidence.

And Wenger believes avoiding injuries is key.

"He needs one or two years without problems to get the full confidence and belief back", Wenger was quoted as saying by the BBC.

Wilshere suffered his ankle injury this season due to a tackle from Manchester United defender Paddy McNair in November, with the Red Devils running out winners at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal still have to play the reverse fixture this season and Wilshere will surely have his eye on featuring.
