Manchester United linked Dutch defender Stefan de Vrij has insisted that he is happy to stay at Lazio.

The Dutch international defender joined the Rome-based club last summer from Feyenoord and has quickly established himself as the defensive rock of Stefano Pioli’s Lazio team.

Before joining the Italian outfit, De Vrij was heavily linked with a move to Manchester United last summer because of his former Netherlands’ boss Louis van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal is again expected to be in the market for defenders in the next transfer window and there has been speculation that he will be looking to take his compatriot De Vrij to Old Trafford to shore up his backline.

However, the 23-year-old insisted that he is happy with his progress at Lazio and is keen to continue at the Stadio Olimpico beyond the summer.

Speaking to FOX Sports, the Dutch defender said: “I have improved in Rome and I am happy to be with the Biancocelesti.

“I do not know anything about the transfer rumours; in fact I am here and next season I will be at Lazio.

“I hope to play in the Champions League but would remain here regardless.”

Lazio are currently third in the Serie A standings and are on course to play in the Champions League qualification playoff next season.
