Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar believes Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will prepare Memphis Depay well for the challenges he will face in the Premier League.

Manchester United reached a €32m agreement with PSV Eindhoven for the transfer of the winger last week and Depay is soon expected to arrive in Manchester for his medical before signing on the dotted line with the club.

A highly-rated winger, the 21-year-old has scored 22 Eredivisie goals in the season to shape PSV’s league title triumph but doubts have been raised whether he will be able to carry that form into the much tougher environment of the Premier League.

Vlaar, Depay’s international team-mate, himself feels that the Premier League will test the Dutchman but stressed that in last summer’s World Cup Depay has already shown that he has the ability to raise his game when needed.

The Villa defender also feels that the presence of Van Gaal at Manchester United is crucial as he will do everything to prepare Depay for the Premier League’s tougher challenge.

“He has already shown in the World Cup that he can adapt to a higher level”, Vlaar told Voetbal International.

“Louis van Gaal will prepare him for the challenges and that will certainly help him.

“Memphis is still young; he had his fair share of ups and downs this season but he didn’t stop scoring and that quality makes him dangerous.”
