Former PSV Eindhoven assistant coach Erik ten Hag believes Memphis Depay’s move to Manchester United is a shot in the arm for Dutch football.

Depay is set to complete his €32m move to Manchester United from PSV Eindhoven next week when he is expected to undergo a medical and sign a contract with the Red Devils.

The winger’s move to Manchester United has been one of the hot topics of discussion over the last week or so, both in England and the Netherlands and a lot is already expected from the 21-year-old, who has scored 22 goals in the Eredivisie this season.

Ten Hag, who was former PSV boss Fred Rutten’s assistant at the club, is also excited about Depay’s move to Manchester United but stressed that the challenge for the Dutchman is to take his game to the next level at Old Trafford.

“In England his challenge is to further develop because he needs to be at his best at Manchester United”, Ten Hag told Voetbal International.

“He must showcase his talent and also become an important player for the Oranje.”

The 45-year-old feels the winger has the talent to become a modern Dutch great and believes that his big money move to Manchester United is a boost for Dutch football, which has been waiting for a talent like Depay to emerge for a while.

“We have not seen someone like Memphis in the Netherlands for a long time. He has the ability to follow greats such as [Arjen] Robben, [Robin] van Persie and [Wesley] Sneijder.

“Therefore his transfer is also a big boost for Dutch football.”
