Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho feels that his team’s defeat to West Bromwich Albion last night is a consequence of them being crowned champions so early, adding that their fellow title contenders should have given them a tougher fight, which wasn’t the case.

Mourinho’s men wrapped up the title with four games to spare as their 3-1 defeat of Leicester City on matchday 34 gave them an unassailable lead at the top of the Premier League standings.

The newly-crowned champions faced Tony Pulis’ West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns last night, and in a match that saw Cesc Fabregas ejected at around the half hour mark, the visitors lost 3-0.

The three-time Premier League winning manager feels that his team’s defeat is due to them being crowned champions so early, adding that their title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal didn’t push them enough.

He further pointed out that had the match been of any consequence for his team, they would have competed at a higher level.

“This is a consequence of being champions so early”, Mourinho was quoted as saying by his club’s site.

“The ideal scenario is to be champions and to not play again – go home, have holidays and not play again.

“When you have three more matches to play, what has happened to Bayern Munich can happen – lose three in three – and what is happening to us can happen, one point in two matches.

“Let’s blame the players a little bit, let’s blame myself, and let’s blame the top contenders for the title because they were not good enough to fight with us until the end.

“If today we needed this game to be champions, I am not saying we would win, but I am saying we would compete at a higher level to win.”
