Louis van Gaal wants to bring Germany national team captain Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United this summer to shore up his midfield, it has been claimed.

The Manchester United manager is worried about Michael Carrick’s fitness issues and wants to bring in a quality midfielder this summer to add balance to his squad.

His search for a midfield general has taken him to his old stomping ground of Bayern Munich and according to German magazine Kicker, the Dutchman wants to lure Schweinsteiger to Old Trafford before the start of the new season.

While still an important player in Pep Guardiola’s squad, the 30-year-old is not believed to be indispensable for the team anymore and with his contract expiring at the end of next season, Bayern Munich are yet to offer him fresh terms.

Van Gaal shared a good rapport with the German national team captain while he was at the Allianz Arena and is widely credited for shifting Schweinsteiger from an attacking midfield role to his current defensive midfield position, where he has excelled over the last few years.
