Manchester United have told Real Madrid to wait a year to sign David de Gea and are holding firm to their no-sale stance.

De Gea has only a year left to run on his contract with Manchester United and has so far not put pen to paper on an extension. He is thought to be keen to return to his homeland, where Real Madrid are waiting with open arms.

It had been thought if De Gea does not sign up then Manchester United will be forced into selling him, but the English giants are prepared to let the goalkeeper see out his contract.

Indeed, according to Spanish TV programme El Chiringuito, Manchester United have told Real Madrid they will have to wait a year to sign De Gea.

Louis van Gaal's side do not want to lose the Spaniard, especially as they have booked a return to the Champions League for next season.

Whether Real Madrid will be willing to put their plans to sign De Gea on hold for 12 months remains to be seen, but if the Spaniard does not sign a new deal with Manchester United, they could then snap him up at the end of his contract.

De Gea has been lauded for his performances between the sticks for Manchester United this season and the English giants do not want him to leave.
