Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier believes Lyon forward Alexandre Lacazette has the potential to become a top class performer in the future.

The 23-year-old forward has been the top marksman in French football this season and his 27 Ligue 1 goals dragged Lyon to the runners-up spot behind Paris Saint-Germain.

His exploits in France this season have also attracted the prying eyes of some of the top clubs across Europe, including English clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool.

Former Reds boss Houllier feels that though Lacazette is the top goalscorer in Ligue 1 this season, he still needs to improve a lot before he can be considered world class.

However, he feels if the forward continues to work hard on his game there is no reason why he won’t reach that level.

"He's top of the premier league in France, the Ligue 1, but he's not international yet, and he knows that. But he can be world class", Houllier told Ligue 1's official website.

"I was told he's a very dedicated professional.

“So if he looks after himself and if he does the right thing then he can become really top notch."

Lacazette has earned five international caps for France but is yet to find the back of the net for his country.
