Louis van Gaal has insisted the Victor Valdes is good enough to be the first choice Manchester United goalkeeper.

The Dutchman may have to solve a goalkeeping conundrum this summer as David de Gea’s future at the club is far from certain.

He is yet to put pen to paper on a lucrative new deal, that will replace his current contract which expires at the end of next season and with Real Madrid knocking on the door for him, Manchester United are far from sure about who will wear their number one jersey next term.

Valdes, a three-time Champions League winner, is waiting on the sidelines for his opportunity and many feel the former Barcelona custodian is good enough to replace his younger compatriot at Old Trafford.

Van Gaal refused to compare the two quality Spanish goalkeepers but stressed that if Valdes was not good enough he wouldn’t be in the Manchester United squad.

However, the former Barcelona boss added that he still believes De Gea will stand between the sticks for Manchester United next season.

"First we have to see if De Gea is leaving," the Dutchman said in a press conference.

"After that we shall talk about the other things.

“That he [Valdes] is good enough to be a Manchester United goalkeeper, of course that is the case. Otherwise he wouldn't be here.

"I believe still that David De Gea will stay.”
