Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is hoping for an entertaining and open game of football against Hull City on Sunday.

With Champions League football sealed, Louis van Gaal’s team are not under any kind of pressure for their last game of the season and the result is also not going to affect their place in the league table.

However, the scenario is completely different for the Tigers. Steve Bruce’s men have to win against their more fancied opponents and then hope for a West Ham win over Newcastle United in order to survive in the Premier League this season, otherwise they will be relying on a Newcastle draw and goal difference.

Bruce, a former Manchester United skipper, is yet to beat his former side in a league encounter in his managerial career and Smalling stressed that he should not expect any favours on Sunday too.

"I see it as any other game and I think he [Bruce] will, too", Smalling told MUTV.

"Obviously he’d hope that Manchester United do him a favour, but I don’t think that will be the case when we step onto that pitch.”

The England defender is hoping Hull’s need for a win will force them to play on the front-foot at the KC Stadium and he believes that augurs well for Manchester United as it will then be an open game of football, which favours Van Gaal’s men.

"Hull obviously have to win the game and that will make for an entertaining match, where they won’t be able to defend like a lot of teams do – they’ll have to come out at us.

"I think that will make it a much more open game and a more enjoyable one for us."
