Manchester United are in pole position to snap up Nicolas Gaitan from Benfica, according to Portuguese daily Record.

The Red Devils have been consistently linked with Gaitan for a period of years and now may be willing to pull the trigger on a summer transfer.

Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is keen to bolster his squad ahead of next season and Gaitan would offer the Dutchman considerable Champions League experience.

Benfica snapped Gaitan up from Boca Juniors in 2010 and he quickly flourished at the Estadio da Luz.

Despite consistent transfer speculation the 27-year-old has remained true to the Portuguese giants and not pushed for a big-money move.
