Per Mertesacker has paid tribute to the Arsenal fans for the backing they have offered this season, especially at difficult points during the campaign.

The Gunners have rallied towards the end of the season and look all but sure to finish the campaign in third spot in the Premier League.

Arsenal are through to the FA Cup final, where they will face Aston Villa at Wembley at the end of the month, but did suffer disappointment in the Champions League after Monaco knocked them out in the Round of 16 stage.

For Mertesacker, points during the season were not easy, but the Gunners fans continued to support the side, something he is immensely grateful for.

"At times it was a difficult season for everyone, but the support throughout was absolutely fantastic and great and gave us a lift at some stages", he told his club's site.

"We are absolutely delighted with our fans and appreciate their support very much."

Now the former Germany defender is looking to for Arsenal to sign off on 2014/15 in style by winning the FA Cup, something he also believes would create a feel-good factor for the start of next season.

"We want to finish strong, with three points to seal third spot and to have a good feeling for the FA Cup final. We also want to give the fans a good feeling for next season.

"It would be great if we can achieve that, so we will do everything to give ourselves a good level of confidence."

Arsenal finish their Premier League season by welcoming Tony Pulis' West Brom to the Emirates Stadium tomorrow.
