Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has been shown the door by Bundesliga giants Schalke, according to multiple reports in Germany.

Di Matteo only took charge at Schalke in October last year, but his style of play alienated a number of the club's fans, who saw his methods as too defensive.

The Italian, who led Chelsea to the Champions League in 2012, saw some Schalke fans turn their backs on him in their final home match of the season and calls for him to go grew.

Schalke finished the season with a disappointing 2-0 defeat away at struggling Hamburg yesterday.

As a result they could finish just sixth, outside a top four Champions League spot the club craved.
