Huub Stevens has played down comparisons with Louis van Gaal after he masterminded salvation for Stuttgart in yesterday's Bundesliga relegation battle.

Stuttgart grabbed a 2-1 win away at bottom club Paderborn to stay just ahead of the relegation curve, surviving on 36 points from 34 games and sitting in 14th spot.

As the day dawned Stuttgart were in serious danger of relegation and victory for Hamburg over Schalke further heaped pressure on Stevens' men.

The Dutch tactician was quickly hailed as a hero, but he was keen to play down the hype after the final whistle and avoid celebrations.

"I'm not a party beast", he told reporters.

"I'm not Louis van Gaal, just a regular Huub."

Stevens also insists he wants no statue putting up for his efforts. "I do not need a statue", he said.

The former Netherlands international coached Stuttgart briefly last season, but resigned in May following ten games in charge.

He was again handed the reins in November this year, with Stuttgart struggling. And now Stevens has ensured the club have retained their Bundesliga status for next term.
