Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says his players should have done better in certain situations away at Stoke City, after they went down to a 6-1 defeat in their final Premier League game of the season.

Stoke took charge of proceedings at the Britannia Stadium with Mame Biram Diouf handing them the lead in the 22nd minute, with Simon Mignolet parrying a Charlie Adam shot into his path.

Diouf then completed a brace just three minutes later as he unleashed a superb shot from the edge of the area which flew past Mignolet.

It was 3-0 only five minutes after that, Jonathan Walters the scorer after he took advantage of a poor clearance from Emre Can.

Adam added a fourth in the 41st minute before Steven Nzonzi put Stoke 5-0 ahead on the stroke of half time.

Liverpool did pull one back in the 71st minute, with Steven Gerrard finishing calmly after good work from Rickie Lambert.

But a further Stoke goal, a header from Peter Crouch, made it 6-1.

For Rodgers, his players failed in important one on one situations and should simply have done better.

"We should have been much better in certain defensive moments in the game", he told a press conference.

"We've got to show aggression and desire to stop people running past you and being beaten in a one on one duel.

"It was a bit disappointing."

Rodgers also apologised to the club's fans and dubbed the first half display "awful".

"It was awful in the first half, absolutely awful.

"All the supporters connected with Liverpool will be embarrassed and they deserve an apology – we were too easily beaten."

Rodgers also said if the club's owners want him to leave he will.
