Liverpool legend Gary Gillespie feels the Reds got their formation and tactics wrong against Stoke City yesterday.

Stoke City raced away to a 5-0 lead in the first half and though Liverpool improved after the break, they suffered a confidence sapping 6-1 defeat at the Britannia Stadium.

Brendan Rodgers started the game without a recognised striker on the pitch and played Philippe Coutinho up front on his own.

Gillespie admits that the formation didn’t make any sense to him before the start of the game and said that the side looked confused in a shambolic first half performance against the Potters.

The former defender also slammed the lackadaisical performance of the Liverpool midfield which exposed the defenders to frequent Stoke attacks.

“Before the game I was looking at the formation and was thinking how it is going to work?” Gillespie told LFC TV.

“Coutinho playing as a centre forward, Steven Gerrard supporting while the two wide players coming in, making it narrower.

“It didn’t work at all. He looked all at sea; even the two holding players, Joe Allen and Lucas Leiva, who are normally reliable, they just didn’t turn up today.”

Gillespie was disappointed to see Liverpool getting humiliated by Stoke and said that such kinds of scorelines are tough to digest for a Reds supporter.

“We were so exposed today; you could see they loved it. You never see teams taking the Mickey out of Liverpool.

“It was fantastic if you are a Stoke City supporter but not a great day for Liverpool.”
