Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer feels Steven Gerrard was the only Red who was trying to make things happen against Stoke City yesterday.

Racing away to a 5-0 lead before half-time, the Potters carried out a 6-1 demolition job over Brendan Rodgers’ men at the Britannia Stadium. McAteer described Liverpool’s performance before the break as ‘abysmal’.

Liverpool finished the season 6th in the league table and ended the campaign with just one win from their last six encounters.

McAteer said that it was one of the most shambolic performances he has ever seen from a Liverpool side but still lauded Gerrard, who scored the solitary goal for the Reds.

The former Red feels that the Liverpool captain, who was playing his last game for the club, was the only player who was trying to get things going for Rodgers’ men but admits that even he failed to grab hold of the game against a rampant Stoke side.

“It is the worst performance I have seen from Liverpool for a long time”, McAteer told LFC TV.

“One thing that brought a smile to my face was Steven Gerrard’s goal.

“Out of all the players, I felt he was the one who was still trying, running, trying to lead by example but unfortunately he failed to get never the game, couldn’t get hold of it, and couldn’t dictate it.

“It was an absolutely abysmal display in the first half.”
