Former Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-sung has said that it was painful seeing the Red Devils miss out on Champions League football this season and is elated to see them back among the European elite.

During the ill-fated ten-month tenure of David Moyes at the helm last season, Manchester United finished seventh in the league standings and thereby missed out on Champions League qualification.

Louis van Gaal took the reins of the three-time European champions at the start of the current season and they have swiftly returned to the elite club competition, having finished fourth in the league table.

Park, who enjoyed a seven-year stint with the Red Devils from 2005 until his departure for Queens Park Rangers in 2012 and was himself a European champion with the Manchester giants, has said that it is good to see his old club back among the European elite after a year’s absence.

"It has been painful for me not to see United in the Champions League but now we have to look forward and prepare well for next season’s competition”, he told MUTV.
