Paris Saint-Germain are stepping up their efforts to sign Angel di Maria from Manchester United and have been in discussions with the player's representatives, according to French sports daily L'Equipe.

The French champions lost out to Manchester United last summer, seeing Di Maria swap Real Madrid for Old Trafford rather than the Parc des Princes.

PSG were hamstrung by UEFA's financial fair play rules, but president Michel Platini has signalled an easing which has been welcomed in Paris.

Now PSG have stepped up discussions with Di Maria's representatives over a potential move to the French capital for the winger, while crucially they have also had the message delivered that the Argentine would be happy to sign up.

Manchester United's stance remains a potential hurdle though, as the Red Devils are not keen on cashing in on the winger despite him being ineffective during his first season at the club.

But even so, Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal is not believed to be completely convinced by Di Maria and PSG are prepared to tempt the Dutchman into selling by offering to include former Ajax right-back Gregory van der Wiel in any deal.

Van Gaal is on the lookout for a right-back and Van der Wiel may appeal to the Manchester United.
