Brondby sporting director Per Rud and coach Thomas Frank have lavished praise on defender Daniel Agger, admitting they still cannot quite believe they managed to sign the player from Liverpool last summer.

Just 12 months after being linked with a big-money move to Manchester City and despite also interesting Barcelona at points over the previous year, Agger landed at Brondby from Liverpool last summer.

Brondby paid just £3m to sign Agger from Liverpool, with Reds manager Brendan Rodgers having brought in Dejan Lovren for £20m as his replacement. But as Liverpool's defence has toiled this season, Brondby's has benefited from Agger's presence.

Agger helped Brondby to a 3-2 Superliga win away at champions FC Midtjylland yesterday, scoring his side's winning goal.

Sporting director Rud was quick to purr with praise, telling Ekstra Bladet: "If I may be a little cocky, I would say that he is too good for the Danish league.

"We just have to pinch ourselves on the arm when we see that he is with us – and I regularly do that."

And Rud's praise was equalled by Frank, who has the pleasure of coaching Agger at Brondby and being able to field him for the Danish giants.

"He has so much class", Frank exclaimed.

"He has the whole package and he's in a league of his own.

"There is no doubt that he is the Superliga's best player and he showed that."
