Chelsea forward Didier Drogba has revealed that his decision to leave the Blues this season is due to his desire to play regular football, something that he wasn’t accorded at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba joined the west London outfit – his second spell at the club after his departure in 2012 for Chinese side Shanghai Shenhua – at the start of the current season. He was behind Diego Costa in the pecking order in manager Jose Mourinho’s plans.

The former Ivory Coast international made 28 Premier League appearances, scoring four times and assisting a solitary goal in the process, but only eight of his appearances came as a starter.

Drogba announced his decision to leave Stamford Bridge in the wake of Chelsea’s successful league campaign as they wrested the title from Manchester City. And the 37-year-old has revealed that his decision is down to his desire to play more regularly

“I know next year I will want to have more minutes than now”, he was quoted as saying by his club’s site.

“I want to play and finish on a high knowing I gave everything. I just want to enjoy before I say stop. For me to stay here and finish on a frustration is not possible.

“Plus the team needs to be stronger next year to compete in the Champions League. They are also going to buy new players and they also have young players coming through, they need to play.

“It’s not that I’m not a competitor but I think it’s time to give them a chance.

“I’m going to have a few days and weeks to think about what is good for me next, but all I want is to play.

"I am a bit frustrated because of course like every player you want to play more; you want to play every game.”
